"Pamiętnik Literacki" - a scholarly quarterly dedicated to Polish literary history and to the problems of literary criticism and literary theory - is the most prestigious and the oldest Polish Philology periodical. It was created in 1902 as a continuation of the "Pamiętnik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. Adama Mickiewicza" ["The Adam Mickiewicz Literary Association Memoirs"] (published in Lwów in 1887-1898). Published by the Wydawnictwo Ossolineum [Ossolineum Publishing House], till 1939 it was edited in Lwów, then, in the years 1946-1950 in Warsaw, and since 1950 - in Wrocław. Till 1950 it was part of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Association, in 1952 it became part of the IBL PAN (in 1950-1951 two yearly editions: XLI and XLII were published together by the Association and IBL PAN). Since the beginning of 2003 it has been published by the IBL PAN Publishing.

The subsequent editors in chief were outstanding literary scholars: W. Bruhnalski, B. Gubrynowicz, E. Porębowicz, T. Pini, L. Bernacki, W. Hahn, I. Chrzanowski, K. Kolbuszewski, E. Kucharski, S. Łempicki, J. Krzyżanowski, T. Mikulski, B. Zakrzewski; since the fascicle 2/1998 G. Borkowska.

The scheme of the contents established at the moment of the creation of "PL" has survived in its main outline till now: Treatises and articles (large source studies in literary history and literary criticism, in the last years largely dedicated to contemporary literature, studies of the folklore), Materials and notes (contributions, biographic and bibliographic findings, textological and editorial problems, editions of unpublished texts, e.g. writers' correspondence), Reviews and surveys (critical studies of the most important publications, including important reviews of syntheses and classical editions). The bibliographic comparisons published at the beginning were later eliminated and two new sections appeared: in 1950 Problems of the Artistic Language (introduced by Maria Renata Mayenowa; dedicated e.g. to poetics and stylistics, mainly from a historical point of view, to works from the border of linguistics and from other areas, such as structuralism, deconstruction and literary communication), and in the years 1960-1994 the section Translations (introduced by Henryk Markiewicz, continued by Michał Głowiński till the number 3/1994; containing the translations of texts written by foreign scholars, grouped problem-wise and presenting new currents, methods and research procedures). Since the number 1/1999 there has been a new section: Foreign-language periodicals, containing the review of current publications in foreign periodicals. This scheme is completed by Chronicle, comprising obituaries (the portraits of literature scholars who have passed away), as well as correspondence and discussions. Some numbers have been given the shape of monographs, dedicated to particular writers (e.g. Rej, Mickiewicz, Słowacki, Krasiński, Norwid, Sienkiewicz, Kasprowicz, Wyspiański, Miłosz) and to chosen literary periods (the Old Polish period, Renaissance, Enlightenment, literature of People's Poland); the first number after the break caused by the WWII had a special character - containing the obituaries of 62 scholars dead and murdered during the war.

Among the contributors of the quarterly in the whole period of its existence there have been the most outstanding scholars of several generations - from the creators of scientific Polish Studies at the end of the 19th century, to the contemporary luminaries of Polish Philology. The magazine is open not only to the texts of the already distinguished authors but also to valuable debuts. It also cooperates with foreign scholars (e.g. in 1973 a special number with the participation of 25 Slavic and Polish Philologists worldwide was published, on the occasion of the International Congress of Slavists in Warsaw; single works by Polish Philologists from different countries have often been published). A large number of "PL" copies reaches foreign subscribers, especially Slavic Philology centers worldwide.
