The studies conducted at the Departement concern the following problems: artistic language, genology, rhetoric, literary programs and poetics, forms of literary criticism and reception, methodological problems of literary history. Because of the variety of interests of the Department's members, their studies are dedicated to different literary kinds (poetry, drama, prose, essays) and to different literary and paraliterary genres, as well as different epochs (Old Polish literature and the 19th and 20th centuries).
Among the most important collective enterprises of the Department are Ogólnopolskie Konferencje Teoretycznoliterackie [Countrywide Literary Theory Conferences] (the 30th Conference organized in 2001, the 32nd Conference "Narracja i tożsamość. Współczesne Problemy antropologii literatury" ["Narrative and Identity. The Contemporary Problems of Literary Anthropology"] organized in 2003/2004, the conferences for younger Faculty members dedicated to the interpretations of the 20th century poets ("Która lektura?" ["Which reading?"], and above all the following editorial series: Vademecum polonisty [Polish Philologist's Vademecum] (comprising large textbook, dictionary and documentation compendia); Z Dziejów Form Artystycznych w Literaturze Polskiej [From the History of Artistic Forms in Polish Literature] - 85 volumes so far; Rozprawy Literackie [Literary Treatises] under the patronage of Komitet Nauk o Literaturze Polskiej [The Committee for the Studies on Polish Literature], 82 volumes so far; on top of that the bimonthly "Teksty Drugie" ["Second Texts"] - 77 numbers.
